About

Our environment is more than a collection of physical structures, spaces and places. It influences how we use it, relate to it and to each other. (This may sound like a statement of the obvious to an artist, but to an old technologist like me it's a revelation!) The challenge of representing this in a two-dimensional image is a key inspiration in my photography.

So far, health challenges mean most of my work is of the landscape, architecture and nature of the picturesque Yorkshire coast where I live, and the moorland and forests nearby. I plan shooting further afield, and more diverse subjects, in 2005.

I am currently exploring how abstract forms and techniques can inform my photography, to perhaps portray familiar subjects differently. I am pursuing an LRPS accreditation via A level Photography at Westwood College of Art & Design, Scarborough. I am now in the second year, and find the exploration of allegorical and abstract forms great stimuli for seeing everyday things differently.

The majority of the images in here were taken using Nikon F80 or FM bodies, plus Nikkor 17-35mm, 28-105mm or 70-200mmVR zoom lenses, or Nikkor 50mm or 24mm prime lenses. I like the 35mm format as it allows me to take all of this plus accesories out on a shoot without renting a pack horse. Occasionally though, if I'm feeling masochistic, I go out with just a Mamiya C330 from college and my old Weston light meter and some B&W traditional film, to remind me of the basic craft skills so easily bypassed with new technology.

I shoot in both monochrome and colour, although now I mostly start with colour images and render these digitally into monochrome when required. For critical work I prefer Fuji film, although I will use whatever is left in my bag rather than let an image pass me by!
